2018 photographs of the year – part 2: Paolo Martelli

Whereabouts are you based?
I live in Barcelona. I’m Italian but I’ve been living in the beautiful Catalunya for the last 11 years.

How long have you been shooting cycling?

I think I started around 2014.

What appeals to you about photographing cycling?

It’s about mixing the passion for sport in general (cycling in this case) and the passion for photography. You have to be very passionate to become a professional cyclist and that impresses me a lot.

What other areas of photography do you work in?

Weddings, but only if it’s in a very exotic and weird place; fine art photography; tourism and  beautiful things in general.

Please tell us a little bit about your style of photography.

It’s minimal, essential and I also try to be funny/ironic. I love to play with anything that surrounds me and use those things in my photos.

What assignments have you done for Rouleur this year?

Helen Wyman, Mapei, Tour de France 2018, Kasia Niewiadoma, the Milano-Sanremo Cover.

What are your plans for 2019?

Eat more pizza but fewer patatas bravas and keep photographing the world in all its shades.
